Now I'm kinda curious as to which it is. I thought her reveal is going to be that she is Jessica. Jessica already is a time child from Mr. Nimbus's first episode. |

| TBH I really don't have any idea. Is there anime in the style of American animated comedies like Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers etc.? |

There are comedy animes, but they're usually centered around either school (Azumanga Daioh, Nichijou) or work (GinTama, Mr. TONEGAWA: Middle Management Blues). Can't think of one that's built around a nuclear family unit, that may be an American culture thing. |

(And I presume the unspoken part is they were all drunk) It's definitely crass and ridiculous on purpose, though I dunno if Rick and Morty fans in particular have much room to throw stones here. Half the fun is watching American cartoon references getting gleefully mangled in transit. Also pretty much everything about Panty is designed to piss off lovely nerds as the opposite of their idealised waifu. A lot of the time it helps to imagine what things like South Park, ATHF, American Dad etc look like from a Japanese perspective, and sometimes you find yourself in the mirror. |

| Konosuba maybe? I mean it's a fantasy isekai but it's about as gag filled as you're gonna get while still having likeable characters. |

They have several long-running comedies, but they are usually more kid-friendly so western audiences are less interested https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crayon_Shin-chan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintama_Rantar%C5%8D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sazae-san https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ojarumaru For more traditional anime, maybe Gintama? The differentiating factor here is... The Simpsons. Most of the current adult cartoons, like Futurama, Family Guys, American Dad, Bob's Burgers and etc are all cartoons that were clearly inspired by the Simpsons, and we can imagine their budget approved to thanks to the Simpsons. The Simpsons literally spawned this entire 'genre' in USA. |

As a concept she fits in pretty well with the sensibilities of a Western audience who either think a bad-rear end, thirsty, lazy bad angel is cool or at least have seen enough of these tropes that they don't register it as being out of the ordinary. The same audience who if into Westerns would watch a show about a woman gunslinger anti-hero with a heart of gold who likes to get laid and shoot guns at the bad guys while firing off quips. But the show wasn't made to appeal to those people in the West. So who is she for? Japanese viewers who share the same sensibilities? Japanese viewers who want to laugh at white Japanophiles who are stereotypes as in turn stereotyping Japanese women as demure and honourable? Those same Japanophiles who are able to laugh at themselves? |

| I'm aware that the art styles can get pretty broad for anime and that it was even produced in Japan, but something about the Rick and Morty anime doesn't even really feel like anime. Like even doing the double frame thing makes it seem less like an anime and almost like what an American animations studio would do if they were trying to parody anime. |

It was kind of made for all those groups. Gainax of all studios (other than Ghibli) is aware of how popular anime actually is in the West. P&S was their attempt at spinning the American crude comedy style into an anime. The director of the show, Hiroyuki Imaishi, is a huge Anglophile, and there is a big western bent to most of his shows like Gurren Lagaan, Inferno Cop, and the Cyberpunk anime. Flip your question, and ask who shows like Avatar TLA or The Boondocks are for. AlternateNu f*cked around with this message at 19:23 on Aug 19, 2024 |
